About Romania and about Bucharest I, Angel, have learnt so much. I knew very little, so most of it was a discovery for me.
I linked the famous Dracula to the country. I thought this was one of the coolest things. I knew the person the legend was based off had existed, but had never placed him anywhere. So knowing about this particular interesting thing that has created stories known all over the world was so amazing.
I learnt Romania has super pristine and healing waters. Their people take pride in drinking bottled water from one of the most pure springs in the world. And some springs are closed off to be kept pristine. Also I loved that some areas are said to have waters that heal and this is believed to be due to the mountains there, the Carpathians. It’s truly a gift from nature to Romania’s inhabitants.

About Bucharest I got to see the historical architecture of the place that is what I picture Europe to be like. Cafes outside in the summer, and people enjoying a famous local beverage called: Melonade. It is a mix of watermelon, orange and lemon juice. I made it myself here and it is a wonderful drink to quench the thirst.

I also learnt and was super excited about the Black Sea. Going to the sea side for us who live in the middle of the country here in Colombia is not frequent. The Caribbean is 20h away by bus and 1 hour away by plane, and the Pacific is 15 hours away by bus and 45 min by plane. But truth is I don’t go often. And I love the sea. So knowing that Bucharest is only 4 hours away from the sea was super cool.
In addition, I got to see the Black Sea and, yeah, it isn’t black. It has this wonderful deep blue color. Jay told me the name comes from pastsailing difficulties. A black colored sea would have been one cool thing.
Getting to know the Romanian culture I have discovered so many similarities with our Colombian culture. From dishes that I find super local like arroz con leche here there called Orez cu lapte, to sayings, to the way families and people behave.
My experience of getting to know Romania through Jay’s experiences has been so cool. A country I knew nothing about that is now a country I feel close to my own.
